VS Code

Visual Studio Code connects to remote MCP servers through GitHub Copilot’s agent mode. Servers are configured in .vscode/mcp.json for one workspace, or in your user profile for all of them. Both the connector and the single-world API key method work.

You’ll need the GitHub Copilot extensions installed and signed in. MCP tools run in Agent mode only, so switch the Chat view from Ask to Agent before you start.

  1. Open the Command Palette and run MCP: Add Server.
  2. Choose HTTP, enter https://app.orbismo.com/api/v1/mcp, name it orbismo, and pick where to save it (workspace or user profile).
  3. The first time the server starts, VS Code asks you to trust it, then opens your browser to sign in to Orbismo and choose which worlds this connection may access.

The result in mcp.json:

{
"servers": {
"orbismo": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://app.orbismo.com/api/v1/mcp"
}
}
}

After signing in, ask Copilot to list your worlds and tell it which one to work in. See The connector for choosing a world and managing access.

Point VS Code at the world’s URL and pass an API key as a header. Keep the key out of the file by using an input variable, which VS Code prompts for once and stores securely:

{
"inputs": [
{
"type": "promptString",
"id": "orbismo-api-key",
"description": "Orbismo API key",
"password": true
}
],
"servers": {
"orbismo-world": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://app.orbismo.com/api/v1/worlds/<world_id>/mcp",
"headers": {
"Authorization": "Bearer ${input:orbismo-api-key}"
}
}
}
}

Replace <world_id> with your world’s UUID (the one in the portal URL when you’re inside the world). When the server starts, VS Code asks for the key. Use a read-only key first.

Run MCP: List Servers from the Command Palette to start, stop, or restart a server, see its output, or open its configuration. MCP: Reset Trust clears the trust decisions if you want the prompt again.

Open the Chat view in Agent mode and select the tools icon in the input box. Orbismo’s tools should be listed under the orbismo server. On a single-world URL, a missing tool usually means your access level doesn’t include it. On the connector the tool list is the same for every world. On a read-write connection, write tools stay listed even on worlds where you are a viewer, and the change is refused when the agent tries it.

Agent mode allows at most 128 tools per request across all servers and extensions. If you run several MCP servers, deselect the ones you aren’t using so Orbismo’s tools stay in. See Troubleshooting.
